COMMON NAME: Stinging Nettle

GENUS AND SPECIES NAME: Urtica dioica

HABITAT: moist, rich, low woodlands, swamps, sloughs and oxbows, banks of streams and rivers, and roadside
MEDICINAL USE: drinking tea in small doses will alleviate diarrhea
SEASON: summer to early winter
PREPARATION: boiling the leaves in water removes the sting. Steep one or two teaspoons of dried leaves on hot water for five to ten minutes and drink daily to alleviate diarrhea.
ACTIVE CHEMICAL: Beta-sitosterol

COMMON NAME: New Jersey Tea

GENUS AND SPECIES NAME: Ceanothus americanus 

HABITAT: open woods, upland prairies, glades and thickets, in well-drained soils with full sun

MEDICINAL USE: Leaves can be made into tea to treat diarrhea
PREPARATION: Begin by boiling water in kettle, then transfer heater water to pot. Add approximately 1tbs of thoroughly dry leaves for every 8oz of water. Steep for around 2-3 minutes then strain into serving cups.

COMMON NAME: Cardinal flower

GENUS AND SPECIES NAME:Lobelia cardinalis 

Season: July to September

Habitat: wet places, along rivers and streams, openings of bottomland forests, ditches, swamps, and lakes
Uses: root or leaf tea to treat constipation, diarrhea and toothache, stomach troubles and worms, topical root tea for hard-to-heal sores, leaf poultice can be used for headaches. leaf tea can treat colds, fevers and headaches.
Preparation: Boil water and add cardinal flower leaves to water. Steep then strain into cups to drink.

COMMON NAME: Lead plant

GENUS AND SPECIES NAME: Amorpha Canescens

Season: late June to early August

Habitat: dry to moderate moisture, prairies, open woods
Use: aids in the rid of diarrhea 
Preparation: take top of plant and make tea with boiling water. Remember to steep before straining into cups
